My air conditioner compressor operates but the air that comes through the ducts isn’t cold?

The Norm asked:

I use 3-month air filters but change them in 2-3 months. Maybe it’s the freon, if so, how frequently should the freon be charged?

You need to call a heating and cooling business to come out and recharge your freon. You can’t do it yourself as they stopped selling the stuff in stores a very long time ago. twistedtart

Sounds like to me the evaporator is trying to freeze up from LACK of air flow… There is no such thing as a 3 month filter,…. I don’t care what they call it. The return air has to be free flowing. That also means the evaporator coil must be CLEAN & free flowing. There is a chance there is a need for additional refrigerant but the trade off is that it had to go somewhere; that means a leak check needs to be performed. Only a qualified tech can install refrigerant & do a leak check unless you have been certified by the EPA section 608 and have access to a halogen sniffer.

There are no-rinse “scrubbing bubbles” style cleaners available at most any HVAC supply. You can save some serious $$$$ by cleaning the evaporator coil and changing or cleaning the return air filter every 30 days no matter what. You should also clean the condenser coil with the more consumer friendly and widely available “scrubbing bubbles” type cleaner and a good spray with the water hose. Polar Bear

Get a filtrete 300 filter, they have higher flow and change it out every three weeks during high usage. Your killing your air conditioner with the ones your using. Turn off the thermostat and go out to the condencer and pull the service breaker, then hose off the condencer coil with low pressure water or at least an open hose end. Your inside evaporator coil is probably frozen up from low air flow. With the condencer rejecting heat and the evaporator absorbing the heat load it will run alot better. Also, the repair technician cant adjust the refrigerant level without the rest of the system clean like this. Your probably not low on refrigerant anyways. hww22

First, always change your filter every 30 days i cant tell you how many countless times i get a call because the house is not cooling or the system runs constantly due to home owners not changing their air filter all it does is make the system work harder and kill your electric. You should know there is not no such thing as a 90 or 120 day filter it should be changed every 30 days for proper system operation.
As for the compressor part sounds like you may have a leak and all your freon has escaped, also make sure your outdoor fan motor is working when the compressor is on, or it could be a bad compressor. Brandon
